Five reasons you still need a paper notebook in a digital age
So you have a smartphone, tablet and laptop – plus your work PC. You have a notes app on your phone, you text yourself reminders, you record voice notes, and you live by your Google calendar or iCalendar. Do you have any need for a paper notebook in 2019? We say yes! Here are five reasons why.
- It’s a safe place to store your passwords
Yes, you can use a password manager and many people do – but others are a touch wary of handing over full control to a system that is not infallible. If the password manager fails or is hacked, where does that leave you? It’s a personal choice, but if you don’t use a password manager then you do still need to create strong passwords with variants for different accounts. The perfect way to keep a record of these is… in a paper notebook!
- You don’t appear rude!
You’re in a meeting at work, and someone is tapping away on their laptop. Are they taking notes, or working on something else entirely? And are they ever going to stop tapping?! Or perhaps you’re having a conversation and you pull out your phone to make a note of something you want to remember. You just have a really quick notification check and hang on – you quickly hit like on a Facebook post. So they, in turn, pull out their phone and the great conversation you were having fizzles out. Sometimes it’s just better to leave the tech in your pocket or bag. Jotting down your notes in a notebook is a more discreet and friendly way to capture key points.
- You can use a notebook anywhere, and it won’t run out of batteries
There are times you are not allowed to use your phone, and times you want to conserve your battery. Having a notebook and a pen to hand just makes sense – and you can whip your notebook out quicker than you can unlock your phone and open a notes app.
- You access different parts of your brain when you write by hand
If you feel like when you write by hand you can get into a better flow, you’re not imagining it – there is science behind that. Handwriting sharpens the brain and helps us learn, because sequential hand movements – like those used in handwriting – activate large regions of the brain responsible for thinking, language, healing and working memory. This has a few knock-on effects. If you’re taking notes at work, college or university, studies have shown this increases your comprehension. If you’re writing down ideas, writing by hand helps your creativity. It’s also a calming activity, and great for getting ideas out of your head and processing them – so it pairs perfectly with journalling.
- If you love stationery, you don’t need any further explanation
For stationery lovers, you can’t beat the feel of a moleskin notebook, buttery soft leather, or the rugged touch of ELeather. The colour pop on the inside of a notebook, and an elastic tie and lines that match – or contrast! Notebooks with checked pages and built-in to-do lists. The ‘back to school’ feeling of a new notebook, even if you left school years ago. And let’s face it, is there anything more satisfying than a fresh, blank page, writing out your must-do actions for the day, and then ticking them off one by one?
Digital is great, but sometimes you just can’t beat the feel of a beautiful product in your hands. And we have plenty of environmentally-friendly options for you to choose from, with recycled paper available in many of our notebooks.
