World Environment Day, celebrated on the 5th June every year, is organised by the United Nations. Since 1974, this flagship campaign has raised awareness of environmental issues – from marine pollution, human overpopulation and climate breakdown to sustainable consumption.
Each year, over 140 countries participate and there is a new theme for every year. Major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments and celebrities adopt the theme in order to support and advocate for environmental causes.
The theme for World Environment Day 2019 is Beat Plastic Pollution. This is timely given the recent attention to plastic pollution, from Blue Planet II and the upcoming BBC documentary ‘War on Plastic with Hugh and Anita’ to the recent EU and UK bans on straws and other single-use plastic items.
Here at Bounce Creative Designs, reducing single-use plastic is something we firmly believe in as individuals and as an organisation. On a practical level, we can help with this – to give just a few examples, we have reusable straws, bamboo mugs and biodegradable pens.
However, we believe it goes much deeper than that. Within the promotional merchandise industry, it is crucial that we give real thought to the products we select.
It is about choosing products you know will be used, rather than sent to landfill within a few weeks. Choosing products with an excellent build quality that will stand the test of time, and with design to rival retail products so you can be confident they will be loved and used.
It’s also about choosing products manufactured with care and using sustainable materials so that they have a minimal environmental footprint. And something which is often overlooked – ordering early to have the best chance of ordering from local suppliers to minimise the carbon footprint.
We have always advocated focussing on product quality, and whilst it’s true that better quality items will cost a little more, they have a far higher impact on customers. In fact, there is a strong business case for purchasing high-quality promotional merchandise: Quality items – and therefore your branding – live in customers’ homes and offices for years to come. Cheap items are thrown away.
